The main purpose behind the trip was to find army ants, O’Donnell’s current area of focus, and discuss their ways of life, including bivouacs, or a living nest made up of hundreds of thousands of interlocking ant bodies. Like, everyone knew who he was — out in the middle of the rainforest, in Quito, in the city, everyone knew who Dom was, so he was obviously quite a celebrity. “There were a lot of things that we ended up filming and seeing that [Dom] knew about, at least kind of informally, but had never really experienced before and especially not in the wild, so I think it was a real thrill for him. “The production company I was working with told me that one of the reasons they picked Dom to be the star of this show was that he really had a genuine lifelong passion for insects and kind of small critters in general,” O’Donnell continued. When the colony enters Phase statary, the abdomen of the queen ant army swells to hold 55,000 to 66,000 eggs. In the middle phase statary, the queen can produce from 100,000 to 300,000 EGSS in five to ten days.

Their jaws can be used as sutures for closing wounds, they will eat almost anything they meet, they are very aggressive and swarm by the millions, they will build a nest for their queen with their bodies, they enslave other ants.
