Korean War veteran and "Chosin Few" member John Gutermuth speaks to Norwood ...

This was just one experience during the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir in 1950 that Korean War veteran Gutermuth shared with students at Norwood High on Wednesday, Feb. The now 80-year-old Norwood resident was 19 during the Korean War. Gutermuth was a corporal in the Marine Corps and was tasked with advancing toward the Yalu River in Korea. Gutermuth was part of “The Chosin Few,” a group of United Nation troops who made their way from Hungnam, to Koto-Ri, past the Chosin Reservoir and to the Yalu River. A fellow Marine killed the enemy and Gutermuth’s battle continued. “My job was to annihilate the enemy, whoever they may be,” Gutermuth said, and in this case, the enemy wasthousands of Chinese soldiers.

small army? for amphibious warfare is obsolete, the last one did in the Korean War, where the Marine Corps be abolished? to eliminate all units Amtrac?

Your suggestion disbanning / abolition of the Marine Corps is an old story. Has been suggested by many. For many reasons. All this looked like good reasons, given the brainiacs who thought up the suggestion in the first place.

Any tips on finding records of a Korean War vet's service?

I'm looking for documents about the service my grandfather in the Korean War. He was in the Marines, and like most veterans of that war, he refused to talk about everything he has done or lived there.

Has any Marine Corps. unit been authorized to wear a Beret?

I am a former marine from the 1980's. Someone recently told me during the Korean war Marines wore Berets in some special unit? Is there any truth to this. This person was also stationed at Camp Lejeune before it was built so I have my doubts.

In 1951, the Marine Corps experimented with green and blue berets, but dismissed them because they looked too “foreign” and “feminine.” But I love my Tan Beret.

Twentynine Palms the Marine Corps Base known as the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center had a massive drug problem when I was there. To this day I am not sure if when the blacks attacked me during the LA Riots on the base if it was real or an attempt by the base to determine if I was an undecover cop. The mayor of the town’s wife was caught dealing to Marines when I got there. To anyone astute it was obvious that the retirement community was involved but since I was not a cop I did not care. This is more realistic than sounds because Twentynine is not owned by the Federal Government and in fact the San Bernadino Sheriffs are allowed to come on post anytime they please....
