In addition to Naval Station Newport Sailors and U. S. Naval War College students, more than 50 middle school students from Newport's St. Michael Country Day School attended. The lecture was part of Naval Station Newport and U. S. Naval War College observance of Black History Month. The lecture was organized by the Naval Station Newport's Diversity Committee. In this photo, Stokes explains how slaves sent to Newport, R. I. were named according to African tradition. During the 17th and 18th centuries, one of three Newport residents were slaves that were brought over from Ghana. gave a lecture to a full house in the Spruance Auditorium at the U. S.
