We went from the M14 reliable, accurate and powerful platform for AR less accurate, less reliable and lower. Then we went to the 9mm 45ACP 1911 M9 Beretta. We abandoned the M60 7.62 (some NavySEAL units still use) for 5.
I agree with some of what you say. In my opinion, from the M14 to the original AR15 was a step backwards, but with modern improvements, this is not the case.
