WATER POLO: Great Oak's Shea inspired by father

Shea’s father, Lieutenant Colonel Kevin Shea, a member of the 1{+s}{+t} Marine Division and graduate of the U. S. Air Force Academy, was killed in a rocket attack on his birthday in Falluja, Iraq, on Sept. TEMECULA — Before each water polo game, Temecula Great Oak’s captain, Brenna Shea, latches onto the wall of the pool and thinks of only a few things: winning, her team and her dad. Kevin Shea deployed to Iraq in February of 2004 and was scheduled to return home a month before his death. With a shortage of commanding officers, he volunteered to stay in Iraq so he could assist other troops as a senior officer. “Help me play hard,” Brenna says to her father before she battles for position in the water. However, an increase in military deployment left Kevin in a tough position.

Each year, the Marine Corps marks November 10th with a celebration of the brave spirit which compelled these men and thousands since to defend our country as United States Marines. A committee of the Continental Congress met at Tun Tavern to draft a resolution calling for two battalions of Marines able to fight for independence at sea and on shore. The resolution was approved on November 10, 1775, officially forming the Continental Marines. As the first order of business, Samuel Nicholas became Commandant of the newly formed Marines. During the American Revolution, many important political discussions took place in the inns and taverns of Philadelphia, including the founding of the Marine Corps.
