Marine Corps uses the ILBE (Improved Load Bearing Equipment) military backpack system which was developed as a replacement for the ALICE (All-purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment) backpack, a World War 2 relic that was found... The Main Pack contains the main load bearing portion of this pack and is 4,500 cubic inches. The Army ILBE pack has three components and multiple configurations. The Assault Pack is the second component, used to carry water, ammo and other gear used for engaging the enemy. This Main Pack has a Pouch Attachment Ladder System that allows various smaller items to be attached such as knife sheaths, ammo pouches, and flashlights.
